The Wandering Brush

I am not an artist nor do I claim to be. I am a painter because I apply paint to a surface. "The Wandering Brush" is the name I call my painting expression purely because somehow the painting finds itself. There is rarely a plan (if there is it lasts all but one brush stroke) and never an image to reproduce but rather a colour, a brush stroke and the beginning of a journey.

In line with the rest of the site all my paintings are featured here regardless of quality for each represents a step and besides which, nothing is ever perfect and nothing is ever a failure but something to learn from.

I do not follow rules as I am a believer that art should be free from boxes and constraints, it should simply be what it is.

Painting 14 - Vertical Horizon

Painting 14

Last Sunday I decided to pick up the brushes after a gap of six months or more and finish my 14th painting. This a weird one and it is a classic example of painting from the subconscious when it goes off by itself and leaves you working out what the hell happened.

I have thought about adding to it, trying to refine it but in some way it would not be right. Expression is a funny thing, there is no right, no wrong, no perfection or imperfection. Perhaps like a tear if you think about shedding it - it risks becoming a crocodile tear rather than the raw unplanned chaotic rain of the human soul.

Painting 13: Abstract Portrait

Painting 13

A friend had drawn a sketch from a photo of herself and on sending me the source image, I thought I would have a go at translating something to paint in an abstract form.

This was my first attempt ever at taking a source image and rolling with it to see where it led.

It actually turned out better than I expected although not abstract enough but I do have another photo to roll with at some point.

Painting 12: Jaw Bone

Painting 12

I have been sitting on this one for a long time, pondering on what the hell I should do with it. Last saturday I reworked the red and then came to the conclusion what is meant to be is meant to be and it is time to move along.

To me it looks like an abstract jaw bone / mouth. It is a little ironic but I think i thought to much on the painting when I was doing it rather than letting the brush find itself.
